If Heaven Falls
Alternative Valentines Exhibition
8 February – 8 March 2025
The Lido Stores Art Gallery, Margate
Drinks reception: Saturday, 8 February, 7-9pm

All are invited to the opening drink reception for The Lido Stores’ fourth annual Alternative Valentines exhibition, ‘If Heaven Falls’, on Saturday, 8 February, 7-9pm.

More than 700 submissions were received during the two-week open call window, from which gallery owner-curator Kristen Healy has selected some 115 artworks that contemplate the themes of love, lust and romance in all their complexity. The exhibition, comprising painting, print, collage, sculpture and other mixed media, will occupy two thirds of The Lido Stores’ Gallery 1 and the entirety of Gallery 2 for 4 weeks.

“The Alternative Valentines show is always a fun and dynamic start to the Lido Stores’ exhibition programme”, says Kristen Healy. “We intentionally run a very brief open call to start the year and maintain that rapid pace through to the opening night. We’ve tried in recent years to give the show a memorable name; on the heels of ‘The Wild Thought’ and ‘Fierce Scandal’, we have ‘If Heaven Falls’. It’s such a loaded title that speaks to the power and stakes of desire – the exhibition is really a meditation on life affirming, deeply felt passion and renewal, the all-consuming nature and catastrophic consequences of lust – love in all its raw, messy forms.

“It’s exciting to see artists’ interpretation of that; as an artist and curator, reviewing those exciting submissions, discovering conversations between disparate works during the curation and fostering relationships with the artists is one of the pleasures of this open call.”

The drinks reception for ‘If Heaven Falls’ on Saturday, 8 February (7-9pm) promises to be a fun and engaging evening for those passionate about the arts – all are welcome.
